Move Number 37, Evidence Of Shift In Artificial Intelligence

GO experts Michael Redmond and Chris Garlock were handling the live commentary during an epic battle between Lee Se-dol and Google's DeepMind artificial intelligence at the game of GO. While they were analyzing move number 36 in-depth, Alphago stunned the world of GO when it made move number 37.

Michael and Chris missed it in real time as their analysis extended into predictions of several possible moves ahead. When they finally got around to checking out the board, they couldn't believe their eyes. Michael (who is a level 9 Dan - the equivalent of a grandmaster at chess) smiled and quickly observed that maybe Alphago had made a mistake, explaining to the audience what a regular move would have been. Then Chris and Michael wondered if the A.I. had suffered a glitch. Shortly thereafter Lee Se-dol got up from his chair and left the room. It would be a half an hour until Lee made his next move. What actually happened? Alphago played a very unusual move which it came up with on its own. In essence, within the context of the game this was an artificial intelligence move. More precisely, it was a robot move and it was just at that point in which Alphago sealed the victory.
